5th City Council District Special Election – Nomination Results

On Thursday, September 15, Democratic Committee Members representing the 5th City Council District voted to nominate Barb Warwick to appear on the ballot as the Democratic Candidate for the 2022 Special Election.

We had four first-time candidates running for the nomination, and we appreciate each of them for participating in this process, sharing their perspective in the Forum, and having many conversations with committee people.

The final vote tally:

Kristi Heidel: 15
Jeff ”Mac” McCafferty: 14
Rev. Michael Murray: 5
Barb Warwick: 58

After a four hour voting window, 92 of 96 votes were tallied by firefighters who volunteered to assist with overseeing this nomination vote. Barb will be on the ballot as the Democratic Candidate on November 8 for residents of the 5th Council District in Greenfield, Hazelwood, Glen Hazel, Squirrel Hill South, Swisshelm Park, Regent Square, Lincoln Place, New Homestead and Hays.

Because this election is a special election, there has not been a primary election. Instead, the City Homerule Charter dictates how a special election is conducted and how candidates may appear on the ballot. The County Democratic Committee bylaws determine the process by which an individual can win the party nomination. The Candidate elected on the November 8th special election will serve their term to the end of 2023.

The 5th Council District, along with other city council seats will have a primary election in May of 2023, and General Election next November.
